Why Should the Book World Care About National Coming Out Day

Why Should the Book World Care About National Coming Out Day Today is The Human Rights Campaign’s National Coming Out Day, and to celebrate we are spending the day featuring  LGBTQ+ voices. Enjoy all the posts here! National Coming Out Day is pivotal for the book world. Part of what has perpetuated the lie that Millennials are “the Gayest Generation in History” is that until the last few decades, popular culture demanded one narrative and one narrative only: men love women, women love men, and any deviation from that is justly punished with death for the transgressor. That’s all that was available in fiction until some brave individuals started pushing back and saying, no. This is who I am, and I deserve the same as everyone else. Books in any formâ€"novels, histories, essays, poetry collectionsâ€"all carry some kind of truth. Books that speak to us do so because we can sense that truth, that spark in the writer’s brain that ignites a corresponding spark in our own. When queer readers and writers have to hide who we are, that truth we try to write is dulled, covered, and finally extinguished. What truths could have comforted, enlightened, and challenged readers today if queer people had not had to hide who they were for millennia? What writings could have been passed down through centuries for us now to read and say “Ah-ha! That’s exactly how I feel! This person has hit upon it!” if the writer hadn’t been made to feel that that part of them, that truth, was wrong, and should be hidden away? I get immeasurably sad when I think about the Sarah Waters, the James Baldwins, the Jeanette Wintersons, the David Levithans, and the Alice Walkers who must have existed throughout the history of the world. We have always had queer authors. They have just had to hide, and veil, and obfuscate their words. Their voices and their truths were silenced by fear. National Coming Out Day also involves fear, fear of how a society (which is trying bit-by-bit to be better) may still respond to someone whose truth rejects the dominant narrative. But with each queer voice that speaks out, that fear is being conquered. As lesbian author Jane Rule has said: “The silence has finally been broken.” Let us celebrate not just the joy of people living into their truth, but the expanded riches for the literary world as the human experience gets told with greater depth and diversity than ever before.

The Physics Of Natural Space - 1620 Words

â€Å"Time-Sensitive Architecture â€Å" IN RESEARCH OF NATURAL SPACE I could only hear my heart beating; the time seemed to stop when I was riding in the wave tube. Furthermore, I experienced the dynamic space when my body was being enclosed by the wave. I began noticing the dynamic relationship between my body, the wave, space, and time after I started surfing and interacted with nature. The wave changed every second with the ocean’s perpetual motion. My consciousness of time was piqued, the sunlight reflecting and penetrating the ripples in the water’s surface (Figure 1), as I rode through the tube. The enclosing space of the tube merged with the different dimensions of light and dynamic movement. Pure nature (water and sunlight) and the movement of wave fabricated Time-Sensitive Space. In architecture, natural building materials continue to deteriorate and change every second by environment, as I observed the wave changing with sunlight and dynamic movement. The rate of deterioration is decided by the material characteristics, the regional environment and the division of building materials. Firstly, the rate of deterioration is mostly decided by the material characteristics, especially organic natural material. Secondly, the materials were influenced by the regional climate such as, oxidation, fading and corruption. Thirdly, the division of building materials affects the deterioration rate in the architecture by more contact area reacting with oxygen and moisture.Show MoreRelatedSir Isaac Newton: Standing on the Shoulders of Galileo and Aristotle1454 Words   |  6 Pagescontributed to the downfall of Aristotelianism and provided a universal quantitative system for approximating and explaining a wide range of phenomena of space and the physics of motion, revolutionizing the study and understanding of astronomy. Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More A leader can still get what he or she wants through other means other than listening to narrations. This was proved in the Thunder ball and the Spy Who Loved Me6. Persuasion is portrayed as the worst leadership trait since it threatens the life of other people. The best leader is illustrated as the one who leads from the front. He or she should be involved in the activity, which would encourage others to follow. In this regard, a good leader ought to be courageous and confident. One of the leaders in the United States, Larry Ellison, is known to apply this type of leadership successfully in Oracle. He is a leader of very few words, but is plenty of actions. George Soros was able to influence the world ideology, but he was a leader of few words7. He managed to stem out communism in most parts of Eastern Europe through his traits. Bond changed the way people conduct their business in the modern society. Before the introduction of the movie, everyone knew that a governmental mission ha d to be accomplished by a group of individuals. However, he proved to people that a mission could be accomplished without the assistance from others. In other words, he taught people to go it alone. In a number of occasions, he goes alone to accomplish a certain task. The outcome of the mission is always successful. For this to happen, the leader needs to be courageous and confident8. The individual is expected to absorb the pressure from outside alone and ensure that a positive result is delivered. Bond sacrificed the life of his loved one and even the country to achieve greatness for the society. In the same way, a good leader is expected to give everything in order to achieve greatness for his or her organization. The ideas of Fleming on James Bond proved to people that they only have to master a few things and they would be ready to perform their duties without supervision. For instance, Bond learned many things, including playing the music and doing business. He was not a music ian since his profession was killing and wooing. As he progresses with his work, he becomes a pilot, a gambler and driving sophisticated vehicles. Ideally, individuals who are always willing to learn new things have progressed in life. Since Bond’s movies were introduced, many people have come to the realization that life is about learning. If something does not work out the way it is supposed, an individual should seek the services of the expert. This was proved in the Goldfinger when bond was forced to seek the services of an expert to defuse a nuclear bomb that was almost exploding. He was pushed aside since he did not know what he was doing. He could have caused a tragic accident were it not for the services of the expert. Leaders are urged to recognize the capability of their team members. Many leaders have messed up things by issuing information without even consulting their juniors. The works of Fleming on Bond have shown people to recognize the efforts of their collea gues and team members. Finally, James Bond shows people the important of paying attention to the small details. In this world, it is noted that each detail matters so much. The small details that Bond picked from Goldfinger helped him escape death. Note taking is therefore the strength of a good leader. Effects of James Bond James Bond has influence the culture of many people in the western world. In the 2012 London Olympics, one of the characters who featured as Bond in one of the movies was given the honor of escorting the Queen. The movies featuring bond have earned a good income to individuals in the industry. Eon productions have benefited a lot from the works of Bond, generating at least five billion US dollars. In many countries, people have seen at least a single Bond film meaning that it is very popular. In the United Kingdom, the influence of Bond film can never be neglected9. The UK Film Association underscored the fact that Bond movies form the backbone of the industry. Many producers are currently imitating the ideas of Fleming on James Bond. Many young people are now willing to feature in movies focusing on the ideas of Fleming. In the United States, James bond is rated as the 22nd best movie in the country. In the United Kingdom, the movies are also highly regarded given the fact that they influence society positively. Conclusion Through James bond movies, people have adopted the culture of never giving up, even though things might not be working out as expected. In Thunderball movie, Bond was trapped in one of the pools full of sharks, but he was determined to soldier on with his plans. Individuals are convinced through the movie that things will one day get better. He teaches people to make use of prevailing technology to salvage their situation. The Many Meanings of Quarter

The Many Meanings of Quarter The Many Meanings of Quarter The Many Meanings of Quarter By Mark Nichol The word quarter has numerous senses as a noun, verb, and adjective, is the basis of several words beginning with quarter, and shares an origin with quart. Quart and quarter come from Latin by way of French; in Latin, quartus means â€Å"the fourth†; it is cognate with four. Quart came to mean â€Å"one-fourth of a gallon,† while quarter refers to one of four (usually) equal parts of a whole. Quarter often pertains, with no further description, to one-fourth of a year, often in business and especially financial contexts but also in terms of one of four segments of a school year, or to one of four periods of equal length that together constitute the duration of an athletic competition or other game. The word also refers to a compass point or direction other than north, south, east, or west or to one-fourth of the horizon or the area beneath it. In addition, it may apply to a district within a municipality or to the people living there, though the term is not precise; such a quarter may be much larger or, more commonly, much smaller than one-fourth of the city or town’s area. Quarters, the plural form, pertains to one’s living accommodations, to an assigned post or station, or to assembly of a ship’s crew. Speaking of ships, either side of the stern, or rear, of a ship is called a quarter, and the deck at the stern of a ship is called the quarterdeck. Another term pertaining to maritime vocabulary is quartermaster. One or more quartermasters traditionally assisted the master, or captain, of a ship (later an officer subordinate to the captain called the sailing master) in navigation; it remains a rating, or a designation delineating job responsibilities, in modern navies. (Among pirates during the Age of Sail, however, quartermaster was the title of a crew member second only to the captain in authority; often, both positions were filled by election.) Although these low-ranking but key naval officers also helped the master stow supplies and cargo to optimize smooth sailing, the application of the word to refer to an army officer responsible for disbursing clothing and supplies to troops seems to have developed independently, stemming from the title of a court official responsible for a monarch’s sleeping chamber. Quarter also describes 25 cents in US currency, especially a coin bearing that value. Terms derived from quarter are defined below: In football, a quarterback is positioned midway between the front line and the halfback, who is halfway between the line and the fullback. (The halfback and fullback positions were derived from similar positions in rugby, from which football originated, while the quarterback position was invented for football.) The noun quarterly, which refers to a publication produced four times a year, is derived from the adjective quarterly, which describes any occurrence of that frequency. A quarterstaff is a long stick used as a weapon; both competing explanations for the origin of the word (either it refers to the placement of one’s hands when wielding it or to quarter used to refer to a cut of lumber) lack authority. A quartet is a group of any four people or things, though the term usually pertains to a four-piece music ensemble. A quarto is a format for printing books or pamphlets in which eight pages are printed on one sheet of paper to produce four leaves with print on both sides; the term may also refer to the size of a publication (about as large as a magazine).
